| Annotation | This is a record of twenty-one in-depth conversations the author had with elderly people, some of whom were known to him for many years. The main focus of the conversations were the "non-material needs" of older people, in particular the spiritual welfare of growing old in a society which places much emphasis on material standards of living. Questions are raised regarding the roles of older people once they are no longer are economically active. Many interviewees expressed a desire to still play a useful part in society and not to be seen just as recipients of welfare benefits. This book is one of a series by Age Concern England on subjects related to the quality of life for older people. (KJ) (AKM). |
