AnnotationPrior to the 1950s, very few people could afford complete retirement before age 65. Today, some people retire from careers while still in their 40s or early 50s, while others, especially those in professional and technical careers postpone retirement until they are well into their 70s. In this article, the authors examine patterns of economic, political and social change affecting US employment and pension policies. A preliminary version of this article was presented at the meeting of the International Association of Gerontology held in Adelaide in August 1997. (RH).
