AnnotationOlder people are the largest single group of users of the NHS (National Health Service), but as currently organised, the NHS is not geared to meeting their needs. This booklet is the result of discussion by Health and Older People (the HOPe Group), an independent group of 15 people all but one over retirement age. It outlines core principles and values which should underpin all health and care services for older people, including: challenging ageism; quality of life; user involvement; staying healthy; equal access; dignity and autonomy; knowledge and skills; information; and advocacy. Singled out as problems faced by older people in getting the care they need are: delays; assessment; home care; charging for home and day care; domestic help; primary care; transport; problems of access; discharge from hospital; rehabilitation; residential care; living with long-term conditions and disabilities; care in hospital; accident and emergency departments (A and E); and preparation for death. The booklet is intended as a guide and campaigning tool, and as a basis for discussion between older people and those responsible for planning and providing services. (RH).
