| Annotation | Osteoporosis results in some 60,000 hip fractures a year in the UK, 90% of which are in over 50s, 80% of whom are women. Hence, in 1994, osteoporosis cost an estimated £750 million in the UK. This report identifies areas of current research enquiry and issues for further study: evaluation of interventions to prevent and treat osteoporosis; the cost-effectiveness of bone densitometry; the value of enhanced fracture risk prediction from the menopause onwards; identifying and managing high risk groups; and determining factors for peak bone mass. Advice to Ministers is included. (RH). |
