| Annotation | Many care staff working in CCHT (Central and Cecil Housing Trust) homes have commented on the positive effect of music on residents, particularly those with dementia. Music for Life worked at Cecil Court to build on research undertaken in 1998 by CCHT and Building Community through Arts. CCHT wanted to explore in greater depth the potential of using sound and in particular live music as a stimulus for residents. This report describes the project's objectives, structure and outcomes. Most significant are: equality of participants; benefits of group activities; new perspectives on ways music can affect clients; importance of stimulation in a care setting; differentiating between music therapy and the use of music as a reminiscence tool; confidence, motivation and sense of achievement; benefits for staff; and the value of input from people or organisations outside the residential home to complement the everyday work of staff. Many of the project's results are subjective, and there is a need for more objective, scientific-based research. (RH). |
