AnnotationThe consultation paper, "Charges for residential accommodation", is part of the Government's response to the Royal Commission on Long Term Care. Age Concern England (ACE) identifies difficulties regarding the distinction between costs for living and accommodation, and those for care and nursing. ACE makes it clear that responses made to this consultation are within an overarching view that the Government should implement the recommendation of the Royal Commission that personal care should be free. It is also important to consider the wider context of community care and the way people can be disadvantaged. ACE responds in detail on the following: providing a reasonable length of time between entering a care home and any decision to sell the family home; giving more practical assistance to those having genuine difficulty in selling their home; the needs of support carers and partners, including their property rights; respite care; and proximity of a care home to carers and relatives.
