AnnotationOlder people's lives are being adversely affected by the lack of availability of adequate transport, and their needs are largely overlooked by policy-makers and transport providers. The purpose of this survey was to obtain information and opinions about transport and compare the findings about older people with those about other age groups in the general population. 605 respondents, including more than 300 people aged over 60, took part. Findings presented concern the transport we use, car drivers versus non-car drivers, the importance of public transport, reasons for transport use, social exclusion, and community transport. The survey concludes that a safe, reliable and affordable transport system would bring benefits to all age groups. The availability of transport is crucial in determining whether people are able to play a full role in society: policy-makers and planners need to take account of this in making social inclusion a reality. In developing an integrated transport policy, the role of community transport, a national concessionary fare scheme, and walking and cycling must be promoted. Older people must be involved in planning transport policy. (RH).
