Annotation63 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) referred to the authors' movement disorders clinic participated in this Dutch study: 40 men and 23 women with an average age of 68 years. Their average MMSE score was 27.5, with all except one scoring at least 23. The article provides information on the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) from different cut-off scores for the Hamilton Rating Scale of Depression (HAMD-17) and the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). The study indicates that the clinical practice to use the HAMD-17 and the MADRS to measure depressive symptoms in both depressed and non-depressed PD patients, to diagnose depressive disorder in PD, and to dichotomise patient samples into depressed and non-depressed groups is justified.
