AnnotationThe context for this review of loneliness and social isolation in later life is that of "successful ageing " and "quality of life". Key correlates are examined, which are: socio-demographic factors; resources (i.e. social networks and friendship); and life events, loss and bereavement. The review is confined to studies of older people living in the community and in which loneliness is the key variable. Major limitations of current research are discussed. (RH).
