AnnotationDuring the 1980s, decreasing the provision of NHS hospital beds for long-term care in Cheshire was a pattern repeated all over the country. By the early 1990s, nearly all of Cheshire's NHS long-stay beds had closed. Since then, the trend has been to admit more and more older people to residential and nursing home care, such that Cheshire now has the second highest nursing home placement rate in the north-west, and the seventh highest in the country. The consequence has been a year-on-year increase in expenditure on nursing home provision. The authors report on a study highlighting the different priorities for health and social services when placing older people in long-term care, which adds weight to the argument for a whole systems approach in developing services.
