AnnotationVisual impairment is a risk factor for falls, on average approximately doubling falls risk in a wide variety of studies. Falls risk increases as visual impairment worsens. This article reviews studies on the role of the balance system; and considers visual acuity, depth perception, contrast sensitivity and visual problems. Visual impairment is remediable for 70% or more of older people with relatively simple interventions such as correcting refractive errors and cataract surgery. However, no intervention has yet been proven to reduce falls risk in a randomised controlled trial (RCT). (RH).
