AnnotationA Department of Health (DH) circular on intermediate care, and the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) have brought intermediate care into mainstream health policy. The aims for intermediate services are that they should: be integrated; provide faster recovery from illness; prevent unnecessary acute hospital admissions; support timely discharge; and maximise independent living. This review explores the evidence to indicate that current intermediate care services meet the aims outlined by the DH. (RH).
