AnnotationThis was an inter-departmental ONS survey carried out on behalf of the Department of Health (DH) in 2001. It updates information collected in 1980, 1985, 1991 and 1994 on the characteristics of people aged 65 and over, as part of the annual General Household Survey (GHS). The report is based on interviews with 3,356 people and covered their living circumstances, their health, their ability to perform a range of domestic and other tasks, and the use they make of health and social services. Data was collected only from those living in private households; local authority homes, nursing homes and hospitals and other communal establishments were excluded. Eleven separate chapters focus on: Housing and consumer durables; Health, eyesight and hearing; Smoking and drinking; Mobility; Self-care and domestic tasks; Sources of help with mobility, self-care and domestic tasks; Using private and public transport; Social networks; and Use of health and social services. The report contains 67 tables, a summary of the main findings and an appendix detailing the questionnaire used for the interviews. (KJ).
