| Annotation | Life expectancy and poorer outcomes associated with ethnicity are important issues for many countries. In New Zealand, for example, Maori die on average 10 years younger than people of Anglo-European descent. Difficulties in accessing services have been identified for Maori and other ethnic groups in New Zealand. However, by taking heed of the Treaty of Waitangi - the agreement intended to protect the interests of both the original inhabitants and the incomers - to influence healthcare policy and clinical practice, this has led to enhanced responsiveness to the cultural needs of patients.
