| Annotation | In Pakistan, like many other developing countries, there are very few residential institutions for older people, who generally live with their children and families. Religion and socio-cultural norms are favourable, so children and grandchildren generally pay considerable respect to their older family members. Economic development, demographic change and social change have all had an impact on family structure and the life cycle in Pakistan. The authors have carried out a survey on the status and role of older women in urban Karachi. The focus is on older Pakistani women's living arrangements, financial status, health, problems, decision-making powers and relations with their children and families. The purpose is to find whether development and urban life have any impact on older women's status and role, and also on family structure and family life. (RH). |
