| Annotation | Four out of ten admissions of older people to nursing homes are the result of a fall, and the problem costs health and social care services £1 billion a year. Standard 6 of the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) relates to falls, and local authority organisations are required to have a specialised and integrated falls service in place by April 2005. The Department of Health (DH) has also issued a guide, "How can we help older people not fall again?". The author reports on examples of how the problem is being tackled. The London Borough of Hackney has a Community Falls Network for older people at risk, which offers exercise classes and t'ai chi. Other initiatives - such as the Northampton Healthy Communities Collaborative, and a pilot site in the Wirral - come under the National Falls Collaborative. (RH). |
