| Annotation | Standard Five of the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) specifies that multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation teams should include clinical psychologists; and Standard Two on person-centred care refers to the need to treat patients with respect and dignity. This article considers the ordered body of psychological knowledge relating to rehabilitation of older people. Its aim is to illustrate person-centred care at its widest, humanistic meaning, as identified in the NSF, by reviewing psychological models which allow an understanding of patient behaviour in rehabilitation. The implementation of this theoretical knowledge in practice is illustrated by reviewing the role of clinical psychology in relation to rehabilitation issues of stroke care, goal planning, falls and ethical issues.
