AnnotationThe introduction of free personal care in Scotland has been instrumental in leading to the single shared assessment and indicator of relative need (SSA-IoRN), the equivalent in Scotland of the single assessment process (SAP) in England and the unified assessment (UA) in Wales. This article outlines the areas covered in the SSA-IoRN questionnaire: activities of daily living (ADLs); personal care; food and drink preparation; mental wellbeing and behaviour; and bowel management. It notes how this assessment measure is designed not only to give an accurate picture of need (including unmet need), but also that it helps relevant stakeholders and in planning services that are based on need.
