AnnotationTemperatures in England from 4 to 13 August 2003 were unusually hot, and ozone and particulate matter concentrations were also elevated. The heatwave was associated with a large short-term increase in mortality, particularly in London. Overall in England there were 2,091 (17%) excess deaths. Worst affected were those aged 75+, with the greatest increase being in London of 522 excess deaths (59%) for that age group. Excess hospital admissions of 16% were recorded in London for the over 70s. Estimated excess mortality was greater than for other recent heatwaves in the UK, and similar situations were reported from France, Portugal and Italy. (RH).
