AnnotationUnder the European Directive on Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation (Council Directive 2000/78/EC), age discrimination in employment and vocational training will become unlawful on 1 October 2006. Regulatory Impact Assessments (RIA) consider the impact of age discrimination legislation on employers and individuals, on the macro-economy and the Exchequer. This is the initial RIA that was produced for the "Age Matters" consultation on proposals for outlawing age discrimination in employment and vocational training that was conducted in 2003. It provides a detailed analysis of the costs and benefits of the proposed legislation; and its six appendices focus on the impact on small firms, awareness of legislation, discussion of the main macro-economic impacts of age discrimination legislation and changes in retirement ages.
