AnnotationThis article is based upon the author's paper of the same title, originally delivered as The Harold Hatch International Lecture on Longevity and Population Aging and has also appeared in Current Legal Problems, Michael Freeman (ed);(OUP, 2002). John Harris holds the Sir David Alliance chair of Bioethics at the University of Manchester and is the author of Clones, Genes and Immortality, (OUP, 1998). The author outlines his own argument for the case of pursuing immortality which he does regard as a "mixed blessing". He strongly advocates that any quest towards immortality must be accompanied by work in ethics and social policy to ensure that this quest is firmly supported to uphold justice in a democratic society.
