AnnotationIn April 2003, the Health and Social Care Advisory Service (HASCAS) received a Section 64 grant from the Department of Health (DH) to look at the quality of inpatient care in acute trusts for older people and the impact the inpatients experience itself had on timely discharge. To ensure that the views of older people were central to the project, a series of focus groups were held to explore the areas of most importance to potential patients and carers. These views informed a set of standards used to evaluate the quality of care in the nine acute hospital trusts involved. These were further developed to incorporate the views of staff who have insight into areas not immediately evident to patients but critical to the quality of their experience. This report presents the project's findings, focusing particularly on standards ranging from needs assessments and discharge planning to spirituality and religious needs. (RH).
