| Annotation | At Abbeyfield Kent Society's care homes, lazy afternoons in front of the television are a thing of the past. Instead, residents are encouraged to participate in activities such as singing and trips out to places that interest them. The ideas come from the Eden Alternative, a concept which began in America, which aims to encourage older people to think for themselves and make decisions about their lives. This article looks at the benefits of Eden - such as a decrease in the use of medications - which stem from other care ideas such as visits from people of all ages (including babies) and keeping pets. The website www.eden-alternative.co.uk provides further information. (RH) |
