| Annotation | Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Chile's first woman president, elected for the period 2006-2010, assumed the responsibility for creating a social protection system for Chile's most vulnerable families. This Brief Note describes two particular parts of the social security system, the first aimed at protecting early childhood, the second at protecting older people through reform of the pension system. The Chilean parliament approved the Pension Reform Bill in 2008. The resulting Law 20.225 overhauls the individual accounts system, aims to ensure greater gender equity, and includes measures to provide adequate benefits to a larger portion of the population.
