AnnotationThis issue of the Journal is in honour of Dr Charles F Longino who died in 2008. Dr Longino contributed significantly to an understanding of migration patterns in later life, which was one of three abiding interests during his career in the field of gerontology. The other two issues, health and demographic changes in later life were connected and fed into his development of a life-course perspective on later life migration. The most cited article of Dr Longino was written with Eugene Litwak which developed the initial typology of three states in late-life migration (Litwak & Longino, 1987). In this typology, a first move occurs around retirement for amenity reasons, a second move related to seeking assistance occurs after health declines and a third move into an institution occurs when care needs can no longer be met in the community. The articles in this issue reflect both the interests of Dr Longino and important directions that contemporary research in social gerontology is taking. (KJ).
