| Annotation | Older people are the main users of health services, and emergency hospital admissions increase with age. As winner of the BGS essay competition in 2012, the author examines whether "hospital admissions avoidance policies" would benefit or disadvantage older people. She considers the general advantages and disadvantages of hospital admissions for older patients. She focuses on specific admission avoidance strategies (e.g. Hospital at Home, community care management and telemedicine), and looks at the evidence for and against their use in the older population.
