| Annotation | This publication is a compilation of speeches and reports presented at the Symposium, beginning with the Robert Butler Memorial Lecture on the future of income security. Other themes covered were: the future of long term care financing in Japan and the Netherlands; predictors of successful ageing in Israel; empowerment and social participation of older people (in India, the UK, South Africa and Argentina); and lifelong learning in France and Europe. A major theme spanning the papers was the need for a social approach to ageing that recognises and respects older people's social capital, and that also promotes empowerment, engagement, self-efficacy and lifelong learning.
