AnnotationThis study is an attempt to understand more fully why resident-oriented environments in residential care homes have proven so difficult to achieve, and to explore some ways in which such difficulties may be overcome. It describes an action research project undertaken by the author in collaboration with the staff of one local authority home for older people. Whilst many positive changes were brought about by the research, strong barriers to change were also encountered. These centred around the difficulty of reconciling the residents' physical dependency and needs with their needs for autonomy. (AKM).
