AnnotationThis report looks at the extent and way in which private sector employers have looked towards older workers in response to labour market pressures. The study, based on a survey of 2000 organisations conducted in Spring/early Summer 1990, identifies both long and short-term pressures on employers that will affect the utilisation and employment of older workers. It was found that only a minority of private sector organisation considered older workers, despite general skill and labour shortages in areas such as engineering and finance. The main reasons for employing older workers were their reliability, and their belief in their ability to do the jobs offered. On the policy measures used to encourage older worker employment, flexible working time policies seemed to be more effective than raising the maximum recruitment age.
