 — a preliminary study in three old people's homes

AnnotationThis is an expanded version of a paper read to the 1967 annual conference of the British Geriatrics Society. It reports some patterns of behaviour in the sitting rooms of three local authority residential homes for old people observed during the author's research. He suggests that status differences and group conflict between residents, and physical limitations on social contacts are related to the observed phenomenon of individuals' persistent choice of the same chairs when these are maintained in rigid arrangements over extended periods of time.
