AnnotationThis Act abolished penal servitude, hard labour, prison divisions and sentence of whipping. It amended the law relating to probation of offenders, and reformed methods of dealing with offenders and those liable to imprisonment. It amended the law relating to proceedings of criminal courts, including the law relating to evidence. It also provided for regulating the management of prison and other institutions, and the treatment of offenders and others committed to custody, including discontinuance of the terms `criminal lunatic' and `criminal lunatic asylum'.
