AnnotationReported here is the first year's experience with a psychiatric service for older people, set up in a hospital in outer London. The service succeeded in attracting able and enthusiastic doctors, and hospital and community staff work together well. Of the 276 admissions of older people to the hospital, over half had been discharged by the end of the year, and of the original 350 beds 40 were emptied, despite an increase in admissions and a decrease in deaths. Answers to problems of morale and professional satisfaction in medical work with older people are likely to depend on changes in medical education even more than on much-needed infusion of money.
