AnnotationDetailed statistics are given to illustrate London housing needs, and the prospects for owner-occupation, private renting, and housing associations. Rent, revenue, and policies for public renting are discussed. The London Boroughs Association suggests measures to deal with the housing stock: bigger programmes of direct improvement, by local authorities or housing associations, for sale or rental; new powers for local authorities, including use of private sector resources; and a higher level of expertise and resources. The report concludes that, unless important policy changes are made, London's housing stock will deteriorate further, and disproportionately to the rest of the country. It particularly has in mind not bearing the brunt of cuts in public expenditure. (RH).
