AnnotationAre communal homes for older people necessary in our society, and if so, what form should they take. The author describes results of a major survey carried out in England and Wales with the help of all local authorities and many voluntary and professional associations.Visits were paid to a random sample of 173 residential institutions and homes; and welfare officers, matrons and residents were interviewed. Part one introduces the subject of institutional care and outlines developments to the early 1960s. The second part describes the life older people lead in different kinds of institutions and homes; and the third explains their "need" to be there. An attempt is made to explain why older people have to give up living at home, and what effects an institutional environment has on them. The principles by which they are or might be cared for are discussed, and changes to government policy which might affect health, welfare and housing services are proposed. The general conclusion is that such communal homes do not adequately meet the physical, psychological and social needs of the older people living in them, and that alternative services and living arrangements should take their place.
