AnnotationThe project was aimed at locating elderly people and identifying their needs in a specific area of Belfast, with a view to undertake action to alleviate hardship, provide community care, and publicise those areas of need which can only be met by appropriate legislation. The survey highlighted the lack of social facilities in the New Lodge area, and the need for provision of a community centre, pensioners' club, lunch club, and an extension of the existing Meals on Wheels service. Four areas of particular concern revealed by the survey warrant further investigation: housing; pensions and other benefits; heating; and transport. A combination of these factors, together with the "troubles", have resulted in an unacceptable level of loneliness and isolation for many older people. (RH).
