AnnotationOlder people may actually shorten their lives by their own behaviour. The most obvious example is suicide; but other physically injurious behaviour or psychological stress can have the same result. By being on the alert to self-destructive behaviours - alcoholism, heavy smoking, neglect of health care, and stress - doctors and patients can together improve survival in old age. (RH).
