AnnotationThis study, commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS), examined the views of 1,000 older residents and 400 members of staff in 100 local authority residential care homes on their accommodation and physical environment. The aim was to explore the interrelationship between the social, organisational and physical environments which constitute residential life. The first part presents a profile of the residents, the staff and their work, and the residential care homes. The second part looks at aspects of the physical environment, and describes the views of the residents and staff on: public spaces (dining rooms, lounges) and private spaces (bathrooms, bedrooms); activity and mobility in and around the homes; aspects of the social environment, including adjustment to residential living and visiting; and group living. In the final part, the preferences of residents and staff are described in more detail, covering arrangement of dining rooms, bedrooms and lounges. The report concludes that residential life is unbalanced because it is overwhelmingly public. The development of residential flatlets - larger and more flexible than single rooms, is suggested as an alternative to traditional residential living. (AKM).
