AnnotationShould older employees retire early to free jobs for younger people? Should the age of eligibility for the State Pension be reduced? The author outlines research being carried out by the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and funded by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). The research has involved interviews and a questionnaire survey with men and women from a variety of industries and at all levels of employment, and a survey investigation with some of those already retired early, to determine the reasons why they elected to do so and whether they are satisfied with the experience. Although opinions were divided, many were of the the view that given the economic circumstances at the time, younger people should be given the chance to work. (RH).
