AnnotationThis paper is part of a project examining the dependence of older people on care and services provided by the state, the family and private organisations in the context of current government policies. It reviews the literature regarding the factors influencing use of state-provided domiciliary services to some institutionalised older people, and presents some preliminary results drawn from large scale data (e.g. General Household Survey, GHS). Factors identified that determine dependence on state services include disability, household structure, housing tenure, social class, income, ethnicity, and gender. (RH).
