AnnotationThis survey on older people's satisfaction with hospital discharge procedures was commissioned by a London health authority as part of its quality programme. 211 older people discharged for 4 hospitals were interviewed about their experiences of discharge and the subsequent period at home. There is a profile of the respondents (only a small proportion were from ethnic groups) and their experience while in hospital. The preparation and arrangements for leaving hospital and returning home, and whether these could have been handled better, are discussed. Most people were generally satisfied, but about a quarter of those interviewed had experienced problems. Recommendations made include: putting patients' interests first; regular review of the discharge procedure by all staff; and regular audit of the effectiveness of inter-agency liaison and collaboration so that individual patients do not fall through the net on their return home.
