AnnotationThis report is based on 146 interviews with older people, all aged 74 and over - 99 aged 85 and over. Of these, 46 were residents in Abbeyfield accommodation, 56 in other sheltered housing and residential care homes, and 24 others living in ordinary accommodation. The research explores older people's views on independence and involvement, and how services provided respond to their wishes. Staff and management of sheltered housing and residential care homes also provided information. Key themes include: the importance of deciding things for oneself; money; limitations brought about by illness and frailty; the desire to receive necessary help without becoming a burden; and the development of strategies for mitigating loss and decline associated with ageing. Aspects of daily life such as household and accommodation arrangements, the advantages and disadvantages of group living, leisure and social activities, are mentioned and discussed.
