AnnotationThis article presents a comprehensive review of the literature and research on families and the institutionalised old published in peer-review journals of social work and gerontology. It follows the family and the older person along a continuum of stages, from the decision to institutionalise to the post-placement adjustment. Areas reviewed include: the predictors of institutionalisation; the placement and transition process; continued family involvement and caregiver burden; working with families; and the post-placement adjustment. Implications of the review are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.
