AnnotationThe nurturing environment of a geriatric centre is uniquely suited to the needs of young people and thus to intergenerational relationships and programmes. Because a nursing home has a relatively stable and accessible population of older residents, rich relationships between students and residents have time to develop. A geriatric facility also provides an atmosphere for staff that, for the most part, is not crisis-oriented. For these reasons, the geriatric centre is an ideal place to link the generations. This paper discusses programmes developed at the Isabella Geriatric Center in New York City, which link generations, create a sense of family, strengthen the community, and make the skills and experience of different generations available to one another. Selected programmes are proposed as ones which could be developed by any geriatric centre which has resources similar to those at Isabella.
