| Annotation | This briefing gives general information about pensioners' income levels, changes in income over time, the different components of income, the position of older people in relation to the general population, age and sex differences, and adequate incomes. Statistics and graphs presented are based mainly on "The pensioners' income series 1994-95" published by the Department of Social Security (DSS) in 1996, and figures published in House of Commons Hansard during 1996 and 1997. The briefing concludes that it is inappropriate to think of older people as a homogeneous group who have all been treated equally by changes in society and economic policies. Differences in levels of savings and income depend on many factors including age, sex, and employment history. (RH). |
