AnnotationPapers presented at the 50th Jubilee symposium for the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) are on topics representing some of the "pillars" supporting the specialty's edifice. An overview of the history of geriatric medicine is followed by consideration of the biological mechanisms of ageing and the relationship to the pathogenesis of age-related diseases. The effect of ageing on the immune system, and age-related cognitive change and the dementias are used as two illustrative topics. Three papers examine future challenges for the specialty for professional training, service provision, and the interdependent contributions of the medical, biological, behavioural and social sciences in research. Two special lectures on incontinence and arterial stiffness conclude the proceedings of this symposium. (RH).
