| Annotation | Many people blame the ageing process for problems they encounter with daily activities, when instead quite often it is the design of the home itself that creates unnecessary disabilities. This article outlines a range of "assistive technology" products designed for use by people with disabilities, and with safety in mind: floor surfaces; hip pads; hand supports and stair safety; and lighting. It also outlines hazards such as cooking and cigarette fires, and introduces the concept of the therapeutic bedroom. Such home modifications therefore play a pivotal role in helping a person age in place. (RH). |
