AnnotationLoneliness and physical health status in older people have been correlated strongly, but in what way is unclear. This study examined the relationship between personality, cognition, social network, and age modelled as predictors of loneliness in 208 independent older Americans aged 60-106 from Phase 1 of the Georgia Centenarian Study. Model comparison revealed health did not mediate the relationship significantly. However, self-reported loneliness itself mediated between personal characteristics and perceived health. Results indicate that anxiety, frequency of telephone contact, and age, but not frequency of face-to-face contact with others or cognitive functioning, affect perceived loneliness. Feelings of loneliness decrease one's evaluation of physical well-being. (RH).
