Hard Times
A study of pensioner poverty

Maxine Whetstone

'A clear analysis of a problem that currently engages many of us'
Social Policy Focus

A quarter of all pensioners have no resources other than a state pension and income support. This in-depth study examines the reality of life on a low income in older age and the harsh financial choices that have to be made. Taking a sample of people aged 70 and over in receipt of benefits but able to do their own shopping, the study provides empirical data on lifestyle and expenditure.

It provides evidence that many people struggle to find money to buy food and pay bills, and those with some savings fall into a 'poverty trap' - worse off than people with no income at all. The report highlights problems with transport and shopping, the difficulties of coping with poor health, and fear of crime as other major factors contributing to a diminished quality of life.

This research is part of the Nestlé Family Monitor series of research studies into family life in Britain.
